DaT scan and drug-induced parkinsonism
DATscan is a diagnostic imaging technique used to aid in the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders. The name DATscan stands for dopamine transporter scan, which refers to the specific neurotransmitter involved in Parkinson's disease. The DATscan uses a radioactive tracer called iodine-123 ioflupane, which is injected into the patient's bloodstream. The tracer then binds to dopamine transporters in the brain, which are responsible for the reuptake of dopamine from the synaptic cleft. By visualizing the distribution of the tracer in the brain using a special camera, doctors can determine the presence and extent of dopamine transporter loss, which is a hallmark of Parkinson's disease. The DATscan is a non-invasive and safe procedure that takes around 3-4 hours to complete.
