DATscan is a diagnostic imaging technique used to aid in the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders. The name DATscan stands for dopamine transporter scan, which refers to the specific neurotransmitter involved in Parkinson's disease. The DATscan uses a radioactive tracer called iodine-123 ioflupane, which is injected into the patient's bloodstream. The tracer then binds to dopamine transporters in the brain, which are responsible for the reuptake of dopamine from the synaptic cleft.
